DIY Fringe Ribbon Bookmark

Updated: Nov 6, 2023

Have you ever used an old receipt, junk mail, or even gum wrapper as a bookmark in your book or Bible? I definitely have and to be honest I was getting annoyed with having lousy bookmarks, especially in my Bible. So I went on a search for a delicate bookmark, but I couldn't find one that I loved. So I decided to make my own out of leftover fabric. It is so easy, anyone can do it!

Here's what you'll need:

  • At least a 1/2 yard of cotton fabric (do not use fabric with any stretch to it as it will not have the same effect)

  • Fabric scissors

  • Pencil

  • Any ruler you can find

measuring fabric

Step 1:

Lay your fabric out and measure how thick or thin you would like your bookmark to be and mark it. I personally chose 1.5 inches.

cut fabric

Step 2:

Take your scissors and snip at least 1/2 inch where you marked the fabric.

Ripped fabric

Step 3:

RIP IT!! Rip it till you reach the end.

Step 4:

Clean up the fringe by removing the loose strings. You can take as much off to get the desired "fringe" that you want.

Step 5:

Cut your desired length and repeat step 3 and 4.

Now you should have a beautiful bookmark for your books or your Bible. If you want to stop the fringe from going any further, you can always sew right before the fringe on your sewing machine. Also, this technique could be used to make beautiful ribbon for gift wrapping. Just make sure you have enough fabric lengthwise and then wrap it around a wooden spool for future use.

I hope you enjoyed this quick and easy project as much as I did! Hopefully, now you won't have to use a receipt to hold your place in your Bible or book anymore.
